Designing for Fingers First

April 14, 2026 · Devlog

There’s one gaming device almost everyone on the planet already owns, carries everywhere and picks up dozens of times a day: their phone. That simple fact shapes everything about how we build Tap Oceans. We design for fingers first.

Mobile is where people actually play

Think about when you play. Not the big, planned sessions at a desk, but all the little moments in between:

  • on the bus, train or in the back seat on the commute;
  • waiting for the kettle, in a queue or before a meeting starts;
  • multitasking on the sofa with a show on in the background;
  • winding down in bed at the end of the day.

Those moments add up to a huge share of the time people spend with games, and they almost all happen on a phone. Mobile is also where the majority of players and the majority of game spending are, especially outside a handful of PC and console markets. For most of the world, the phone is the gaming device.

What “fingers first” means in practice

Designing for mobile first isn’t just shrinking a PC game onto a small screen. It changes the whole design:

  • One-finger play. Every core action works with a single thumb, so you can play one-handed while holding a coffee or a bus rail.
  • Short, satisfying sessions. A meaningful bit of progress in a minute or two, with deeper systems there when you have longer.
  • Easy to pause, easy to resume. Life interrupts. The game should never punish you for putting it down mid-moment.
  • Readable at a glance. Big targets, clear shapes and colours, and UI that works on small screens and in bright sunlight.
  • Kind to batteries and data. Efficient visuals, small downloads and offline-friendly play, so it runs well on the phones people really have.

PC too, but mobile leads

We love PC players, and Tap Oceans is coming to Steam as well. A mobile-first foundation makes that easier, not harder: one-finger controls translate naturally to a mouse or trackpad, and a game tuned for phones runs beautifully on laptops, older machines and desktops.

But when we make trade-offs, we make them for the phone. Globally, mobile has to be primary, because that’s where the players are.

Meeting players where they are

Our mission is to make games that do good, and they can only do good if people can actually play them. Building fingers first means our games fit into real lives, on the device already in your pocket, in the moments you actually have.
